and results coming in from michigan. it will not be for mitt romney. this is a state that he thought he might sort of surprise the polls and went. a two-time governor. a very influential candid it. his son hoping to avenge all of that tonight. but his opposition to that of a bailout might have cost him dearly. exit polls indicated that among many, the union heavy state, that opposition did hurt him, and even though he had argued that a formal bankruptcy was in order, and that is what this rescue of the auto industry turned out to be, bankruptcy top $50 billion with the taxpayer support, for a lot of michigan residents that trumped whenever favorite sun status mitt romney could have gained. one of the states. mitt romney was expected to lose, but that put an asterisk next to it this. the romney folks are hoping to win to offset the possibility. just the possibility of a loss in ohio. there in late the argument. be picked up michigan, iowa, make up for the 18 votes, presumably lost an ohio. that does not mean that he goes for mitt romney. one of those hope for pickups that did not materialize.

, is the president's first win today. mitt romney, we project, will be the winner in indiana, kentucky, and in west virginia. the states that you see in white are states where the polls had now closed, but we do not yet have enough information on which to base a projection. as we were saying, mitt romney has just picked up the state of west virginia. now, you may be looking at this and saying, wait a minute, that shows us that none of the vote has been counted. how can you say that mitt romney has won west virginia? well, all of our cbs news projections tonight will be based on the vote that has been counted and also our exit polling. we have been talking to voters in all of these states all day long as they've left the polling places and based on that exit poll information, we will project winners in these states and we will do so only when we have complete confidence in that projection. now let's look at that battleground states that we keep referring to tonight. these are the states that could go either way. these are the states that are going to tip the balance tonight for one candidate or the

far if you put indiana and kentucky together, that's 19 electoral votes for mitt romney to start out with. we knew he was going to get those votes, we expected two states that are too early to call both georgia and south carolina, are both going to go for romney eventually anyway, we don't know that, we don't have any raw vote, but in preelection polling it was clear those were part of romney's base. georgia was a state that president obama was hoping to target. didn't look like that was going to come true. vermont, three electoral votes for the president, now on the board too, but that was expected. the one we're watching, guys, is the state of virginia. 13 electoral votes. both candidates have been targeting the state. 40% of the vote comes from the counties of northern virginia near washington, d.c. the other parts of the state are more conservative, more rural, more southern, and that's where it gives mitt romney hope of offsetting the margins that president obama could run up in northern virginia. we're just beginning to know what's happening tonight, but virginia is really the
